Arnold Machin

From humble beginnings as a potteries apprentice Arnold Machin rose to become an acclaimed sculptor creating the iconic bas-relief portrait of Her Majesty the Queen used on all Royal Mail definitive issue stamps.

Patricia Machin

Patricia Machin was born in 1921 and studied painting at Goldsmith's where her tutor was Leonard Applebee. Finding inspiration from the Old Masters and still-life, she was an established painter, illustrator, designer and author.

Francis Machin

Architect, sculptor, businessman and painter, Francis Machin was a talented designer responsible for a range of conservatories and garden buildings still seen throughout the United Kingdom, United States and Europe.

The Prince's Drawing School are fully responsible for defining and running the following program at 'The New Studio', Arnold Machin's South Kensington studio. The Machin Arts Foundation has provided some financial support and is pleased to endorse the courses detailed below.

 

This painting of the Machin Studio is by Alex Cree, an alumni of the Drawing School who was based in the Studio during 2011. It was purchased by the Machin Arts Foundation in 2012.

Life Painting: Figure in a room

A daytime course taught by Francis Hoyland, this course considers the way we perceive our environment and comprises two sustained poses over a 10 week period.

 

Tuesdays

18th September - 20th November

The Stuff of Painting and Drawing: Creating an Experimental Atelier

A daytime course taught by Daniel Chatto, students will learn how to create mediums, for example paint and ink, and use them to work from a life model. Students will be guided by their own interests accompanied by the noises and cooking smells of a busy working studio.

 

Painting the Contemporary Portrait

An evening class taught by James Lloyd and Clara Drummond. The class looks at painting the head today while drawing inspiration form artists including Picasso, Hockney, Alice Neel, Freud and many more.

 

Wednesdays

19th September - 21st November

Painting: From the Human Form

A daytime course taught by Claudia Carr and Andy Pankhurst, a course in the 'nuts and bolts' of painting. The first 5 weeks explore among other things tone, colour, light, composition and rhythm using half and one day poses. The second 5 weeks using a sustained pose allows for a deeper development of these concepts.

20th September - 22nd November

Free Life Drawing for London Art Students

An evening course taught by Mark Cazalet and Johnny Dewe Mathews this is free to fulltime London Art Students (student ID required). An opportunity for regular life drawing together in a studio.
